Seller Description
Up for sale is 1931 Norton International, with an ultra rare McCandless swinging arm conversion. This bike was built up and enjoyed over a number of years bynotedNorton OHC singles guru, Dr George Cohen, with additional engine workperformed by the equally well-known Stu Rodgers. Per Dr Cohen, the McCandless swinging arm conversion was done c1947. The bike also runs a c1947 Norton 500cc Manx Grand Prix-spec engine. Dr Cohen built the bike to be fast and reliable for vintage racing anddemonstrating.Compression ratio is 9.5:1.
The bike utilizes a beltprimary drive, Dellorto carb, Falcon shocks, alloy "works"tanks, andAkront shouldered aluminum wheels. It is light and fast. The bike comes with Dr Cohen's build folder, including engine specs, various receipts, his "For Sale" flyer (last auction photo), a couple of engineassembly photos, and copies of my email correspondences with Dr Cohen about the bike.
McCandless conversion: In the years leading up to the McCandless brothers' c1950 invention of the famous "featherbed" Norton frame, they offered swinging armrear suspensionconversions for earlierrГgid and plunger frame Nortons (and other makes). This bike was soconverted in 1947.
Condition: This is a very old, but strong running racing motorcycle, with high quality internals andcomponents that were put together by some of the best-knownfolks in the OHC Norton hobby.Nicks, scratches, dings, dents, ithas them all. But, just look at that patina! It has a wonderful, honest overall appearance. I last ran the bike two years ago, at which time it (bump) started and ran fine, and shifted and stopped with no issues. It willneed a mild recommissioning before any serious road riding/racing or demonstrating. Tires are in good shape, but are old.
Pre-war Nortons are thin on the ground, but examples with the McCandless swinging arm conversions are virtually non-existent these days.I have never seen another in theflesh.Although this bike is a hot rod "bitsa", it is also an important (and usable) historical link between Norton's pre-featherbed and featherbed eras.
Terms: No warranty is expressed or implied. Your offer is a commitment to buy, not an option to buy, so please ask any and all questions before making an offer or buying. I am also happy to show the bike by appointment. I will not ship or crate the machine, but I will make myself available to meet with your shipper of choice to handover the bike. There is no title; this is a racing motorcycle. It could possibly be turned into a street bike, but that's up to you and your local DMV. I will provide a detailed bill of sale to the new owner. I reserve the right to end this auction for any or no reason and at any time.
Check my feedback and bid with confidence. Good luck!
