Seller Description

Up for auction is this beautiful
1961 BSA DBD34 Gold Star Clubman. This bike has a bit over 3,000 miles on her (with
a dozen or more miles added weekly) since a complete restoration. No expense
was spared bringing this bike back to life as a serious road-going rider with
great attention to original detail, yet plenty of consideration for discrete
modern updates. She was built to ride regularly, rather than sit in a shop
window, but her presentation detail certainly makes her worthy of display
anywhere. This is a sorted motorcycle that starts easily and needs nothing to
get on and go like the devil. I have current registration and title in hand and
everything works as it should and better.
Let's talk about the better. Many
up-rated components are part of this machine. Some are visible, like the modern
tires, but the most compelling ones are out of sight. At the heart of this
DBD34 are new Clubman cams (65-2446 and 65-2442 for those in the know) and a
brand-new Phil Pearson crankshaft and forged piston, Lightweight slender-stem
modern valves (normal sized) and a high capacity steel body oil pump are
fitted.
The engine is fitted with an
extremely rare 1-1/2 inch (38
mm) Amal Concentric carburettor to
replace the original GP unit. This Concentric has a sleeved slide, modern
“stay-up” float and new float bowl.

A new velocity stack with screen is fitted. A special taper-bored insulator is fitted to blend
the carb to the intake port. Hours of tuning were spent to develop a
jetting/slide/needle setup that delivers no hesitation, lean or rich spots,
easy starting and a dependable idle. Fitting the Concentric also allows for
fitting of the head-steady, which must be omitted when using the GP carb with its remote
reservoir.
Seven pounds (50%) have been
removed from the Magdyno by fitting a modern
alternator and conversion to a Boyer Micro electronic ignition. All electrics
are 12 volt; lights (bright and dim), brake switch, horn, all work properly.
A rebuilt STD gearbox is installed to provide a streetable first gear with the top gear ratio unchanged. A Bob
Newby Racing clutch and belt kit are fitted to the primary, providing feather
touch clutch action and eliminating primary drive maintenance.
You will find the bike fitted with
the extremely rare BSA optional Dunlop WM1 front and WM2 rear alloy wheels.
They were rebuilt using all sealed high speed rated bearings. The steering
bearings are upgraded to tapered type.
As for originality, this machine
has the correct, but often missing, Quick Detach Lucas headlamp with the
correct dimmer switch. Correct large ball levers and welded perches, Doherty
grips, top-hat cable end adapters, and Smiths 5301 and 1302 clocks round out
the cockpit.
Period items include Eddie Dow fork
dampers, Eddie Dow oil inlet bridge and Eddie Dow dual leading shoe front
brake. Special attention was given to fit the correct size and/or length CEI
threaded nuts, bolts, studs, or washers in concert with the original BSA Spares
Manual.
For full disclosure you should know
that this bike was originally delivered as one of a matched set of four
Scrambles models sold to a London printing house. The
BSA Gold Star Owners Club confirms that the frame and engine left the factory
together.
In the late 60s or early 70s it was
transformed into a Clubman model with the installation of numerous Clubman bits
(including wheels, head and tank) and various go-fast accessories purchased
from Britain's Gold Star Service (aka BGSS - Eddie Dow's Banbury shop). It was
shortly thereafter not ridden for decades (a bad oil pump was found during
rebuild and is my best guess for it being shelved).
Ultimately the bike was imported to
the USA at least ten years ago and perhaps as many as thirty years ago, where
it also sat without being ridden. When acquired from the estate of a previous
owner, the builder was inspired by the Eddie Dow parts and wanted to do the job
properly. He retained several of the Dow parts in the process.
I will be happy to work with your shipping
service and can recommend one, if needed. Buyer must make a $500 non-refundable
PayPal deposit within 24 hours of auction's end. The balance to be paid by
cash, check, or wire within seven working days of auction's end (for wire, all
fees must be absorbed by the buyer).
Bid with confidence. I have thousands more
invested in this bike than what the reserve is set for. There are 25 large
photos on this page, please be patient for them all to load.
