Seller Description

Offered today is a 1978 Honda CB400A Hondamatic Hawk. This bike is in very good original condition and runs great! The paint on this bike is beautiful! There is (very) minor pitting on the chrome parts throughout, but nothing more than you might expect on a 43 year old motorcycle. NO rips or tears in the seat. The tires were purchased by the previous owner and are still like new. No cracks. I purchased this bike for my wife last summer, but it turns out it's a bit heavy for her liking so she never really rode it. So it's only had 50 or so miles put on it since I've owned it. Mostly by me joy riding on a Sunday afternoon. When I bought this bike it had a small oil leak from the valve cover gasket so I bought a new one and replaced it. The air filter was pretty tired as well so I installed a new one. I also replaced the fuel line. The speedometer cable was skipping so I replaced that. The rubber on the shifter was falling apart so I replaced that. (receipt for all new parts) I changed the oil and installed a new oil filter too. I also tightened and lubed the chain.
So basically all you have to do is turn the key on, kick the starter or push the electric start button, put this thing in gear, and go down the road!
This bike is more fun than a barrel of monkeys! It's an older Honda, so it's a cold starter. It sputters just a bit for a block or two, but once it's warmed up it just GOES! It feels like you're riding a giant moped. You can actually use either of the gears to ride, but if you start in second gear you don't have the same quick take off as you do in first. Still has it's original tool kit and owners manual. Everything seems to function just fine on this old bike. Hi/lo beam headlight, turn signals, brake light, horn, electric starter, neutral/1st/2nd gear indicators, odometer/trip, etc. The only item I've found that doesn't function is the kill switch. You can start the bike and it will continue to run when it's in any position. I didn't bother tracing the wires to find the problem, but I wouldn't guess it's too involved. If you look at pics #'s 16 & 17 you'll see a couple small issues. Pic #16 shows what I believe is where the gear indicator sensor goes into the transmission. It has some electrical tape wrapped around it and I'm guessing there should be some sort of rubber cover there instead. I never took the tape off and the indicator works just fine so I figured "If it's not broke..." Pic #17 shows the wire that goes to the starter. It looks like some of the heat wrap material has frayed a bit, exposing the (still insulated) wires and the previous owner wrapped it in electrical tape which is now coming undone. Again, it's not currently affecting the function of the starter, but I just thought I'd point it out. Other than that, this thing is ready to ride. These old Hawks are getting harder and harder to come by these days, and in this condition, nearly impossible! Get it while it's here!
