The 2017 Aston Martin DB11 Launch Edition is a radical change for this iconic company so steeped in history and tradition. A completely new aluminum chassis architecture provides a 15% increase in rigidity from the DB9 yet still has the suspension to make this Aston Martin a true drivers delight. The new in-house designed V12 still has the patented Aston Martin snarl we all love except now it produces 600 horsepower and 512 lb-ft torque of twin-turbo, 5.2-litre brute force. This is a 97-horsepower and 59 pound-foot advantage over the DB9s larger, naturally aspirated 6.0-litre V12, which in turn produces a run of 3.9 seconds to 100km/h and a top speed of 322 km/h, 0.7 seconds quicker and 27 km/h faster than the DB9. Its the quickest production DB ever.
While fast and powerful the DB11 is in tune with todays world as well. With a moderate driving style and the accelerator only partially engaged the engine actually deactivates a row of cylinders to save fuel and limit emissions. To keep the catalytic converters hot and therefore effective, this new engine continuously swaps back and forth between right and left cylinder banks with none of this mechanical wizardry noticeable to the driver. These features along with idle start/stop now provide 25 percent greater fuel efficiency than the outgoing DB9.
This all leads to the silky smooth mid-mounted eight-speed ZF automatic gearbox. While smooth it is, when roused by the Sport plus mode it can produce split second shifts to put the power to the road with Formula One precision. Or settle back in GT and Sport modes which provide a less aggressive acceleration. A lightweight and ultra-rigid carbon-fibre driveshaft connects the transmission to the front-mounted engine, helping provide neutral weight distribution for the best possible handling: the latter aided via nicely weighted, yet very direct, Bosch electric steering.
