There’s no doubt the high-end R8 has the looks to draw attention from enthusiasts and non-gear heads alike, but the S5 is no slouch in the styling department. Its sensuous curves flow from the bold Audi grille and sweeping headlight assemblies with the now-signature LED daytime driving lights to a beautifully rounded rear end with just a hint of a spoiler built into the decklid. The sharply raked windshield and the stylishly sloped roofline and rear window combine to create a sense of speed, even while the car is standing still.Overall, it’s a gorgeous package that generated considerable interest from a range of onlookers during my week with the hot red tester. The most frequently asked question was, “It’s beautiful, but how much is it?” Without exception, the guesses were in the $75,000 to $80,000 range - and those same people were stunned when they learned the car’s base price is $65,900. “You’re kidding” was a typical reaction.There’s more than just an attractive price and good looks to this car. It’s the first two-door coupe Audi has brought to Canada since 1991.

And that sporty exterior is wrapped around some impressive engineering and technology, resulting in a driving experience that’s pure pleasure.The S5 has a completely new, sport-tuned suspension package, with upper and lower front wishbones mounted to a subframe that’s bolted to the chassis to increase rigidity. The rear suspension system is a trapezoidal link affair and, like the front components, is fabricated from aluminum to reduce weight without sacrificing strength. It all sounds quite technical, but on the road you experience superb handling with outstanding cornering capabilities. Still, the ride is not so firm that your teeth rattle over every highway expansion joint.The S5’s real jewel, however, is under its long, sloping hood. The 4.2-litre FSI direct-injection V8 is one of the smoothest engines I have ever experienced. With 354 horsepower on tap and 325 pound-feet of torque, immediate response is only a toe tickle away. It pulls strongly throughout its rev range and willingly spools up to 7,000 rpm, delivering power in a linear manner that gets the adrenalin rushing. Yet it never feels out of control.This response is accompanied by the sweetest sounds. Audi engineers have nailed the intake and exhaust notes, hitting on a level that’s a joy to hear yet is totally unobtrusive. It simply brings a smile to your face.The tester was equipped with a slick-shifting six-speed manual gearbox - a six-speed Tiptronic manumatic is also available. Like all Audis, the S5 is equipped with quattro all-wheel drive, so one can enjoy driving the coupe all year round.
