In 1992, the front-wheel drive hatchback Renault Safrane made its debut, replacing the Renault 25. The new top-class model went down in the history of the French car industry as the largest and most luxurious representative of Renault. Experts and car enthusiasts highly appreciated such advantages of this car as elegant design, high level of comfort, active and passive safety.

Safrane was initially offered to customers in a complete set, rich for its time. Central locking with remote control, full power accessories, on-board computeruter, mileage counter to the nearest service center, climate control, ABS, power steering and a number of other comfort elements made up the basic equipment list.

The car is soft to drive. The suspension filters out bumps in the road well. Stability on asphalt is absolutely balanced. The body is characterized by high quality and long service life.

The salon is very spacious, its rear part is easily transformable and practical to operate. The original lineup included two four-cylinder injection engines:working volume of 2.0 and 2.2 liters, 107 and 110 hp. Also, their variants with a 12-valve cylinder head were installed on the model, the power of which reached 135 and 140 hp.

The most powerful was the 170-horsepower 3.0-liter V6, and the most economical was the 2.1-liter 90-horsepower diesel, which with a five-speed manual transmission consumed just 7.8 l / 100 km in town. In March 1993, it was supplemented by a 2.5-liter turbodiesel with 112 hp, the company of which was a 2.1-liter turbodiesel with 88 hp.

Renault Safrane was often offered with an automatic transmission.h. At the time of the appearance of the model, the French did not have a "machine" of their own design, and they turned for help to the well-known German manufacturer - the company ZF. The Germans offered a box of the AD4 series, which was already used on the Volkswagen Corrado and on some Audi models.

In November 1993, the Safrane Biturbo version was released with a 3.0 L V6 petrol engine with 268 hp.

The presentation of this car took place in Frankfurt am Main. And there was a reason for that. The fact is that when creating Safrane, the French turned to two German authorities for help. The most important closers are Herbert Hartge and Gunther Irmscher. The Hartge specialists took up the development of a dual turbocharging system and the adaptation of the chassis in accordance with the new characteristics of the engine. Irmscher was responsible for introducing some elements of "sportiness" into the design of the car and carrying out the final assembly.

According to the Hartge project, the base 3.0-liter V6 engine was equipped with two compact turbochargers, which, thanks to the low inertia of the turbines, weregive a rapid build-up of boost pressure. As a result, the maximum torque of 363 Nm (37 kgm) is achieved at 2500 rpm, and in the range of 2300-5000 rpm, the torque is at least 97% of the maximum. The engine develops a power of 263 liters. with. (193 kW) at 5500 rpm and provides the car with a maximum speed of 250 km / h. The Safrane Biturbo accelerates from zero to 100 km / h in 7.2 seconds.

Safrane Biturbo is available in two equipment and finishes - RXE and Baccara. On the technical level, Safrane Biturbo outstripped many of its competitors. No nAnd one French car does not offer so many advanced technologies at once: permanent all-wheel drive with a viscous clutch as a center differential, power steering with variable (speed-dependent) efficiency, anti-lock braking system, rear multi-link suspension with variable shock absorber characteristics.

The Safrane Biturbo has 17-inch alloy wheels with 225 / 45ZR17 tires. Leather upholstery, high-gloss polished available as standard equipment.walnut wood in the interior trim, the driver's seat, steering wheel and rear-view mirrors, a speech synthesizer that informs the driver about the state of the car, an automatic air conditioning system, a 4x20 W audio system with a CD player, a cellular radiotelephone (in the version of Baccara ), anti-theft device with remote control, airbag for the driver and more. The only optional equipment is an opening sunroof.

In 1996 Renault Safrane was restoredling. The car received a new range of engines, a number of technical improvements, changes in appearance. With a chrome-plated radiator grille, new front and rear lighting technology, an aerodynamically more advantageous integral front bumper and a redesigned bonnet, Safrane has taken on a slightly different look.

After updating the model, automatic transmissions of Japanese production began to be installed on Safrane. A good alternative to "automatic" is a 5-speed manual transmission of our own production. Shewill delight adherents of an active driving style.

Range of engines: petrol 1.9 l 16 cl. / 136 hp, 2.4 l 20 cl. / 165 hp, 3.0 l V6 / 167 hp, turbo diesel 2.2 l 12 cell / 113 hp

Safrane suspension. Front McPherson implies the presence of shock absorbers and triangular wishbones with vertical silent blocks, there is a stabilizer bar. Behind the wishbones, push rods, coil springs, coaxial shock absorbers and the same stabilizer. Due to the fact that the rear suspension of the Renault Safrane has a so-called steering effectohm, the convergence is regulated not only on the front wheels, but also on the rear.

The steering effect is not the only feature of the Safrane suspension. Powerful and expensive versions of the car were equipped with a very original pneumatic suspension.

Along with springs, air bellows were used here. A compressor and an electronic unit were installed in the luggage compartment, the sensors of which monitored the position of the car body at the moment. So, if there is only a driver in the car, it moves smoothly, without subsidence and rolls. When loading baAlready or by passengers, the automation itself will pump up the shock absorbers to the desired level, thereby raising the car above the road. The main task of the pneumatic suspension structure is to maintain a constant ground clearance that allows you to move as comfortably as possible, including when cornering.

Most Safrane have disc brakes on all four wheels. The only exceptions are rare modifications with "low-volume" engines that are not equipped with ABS - they have drum brakes behind them.

Vin the cabin, everything is done so that the driver and passengers do not experience the slightest discomfort. And it doesn't matter what we are talking about - ergonomics or just aesthetics of the interior. After the 1996 modernization, the Renault Safrane interior remained practically unchanged. Only the steering wheel with the radio remote control located on the right under the fingers has become a little different, and some icons on the buttons have been replaced with more intelligible ones.

Since 1995, a frontal airbag has appeared. Since 1997, the standard equipment package includes integrated in the sidewalls of the front seats10-liter airbags that halve the risk of side impact injury. It also became possible to order the Carminat navigation system, but at first only detailed maps of France were stored in its memory.

The top version of Renault Safrane until 1996 was Baccara, and after modernization - Initiale.

In the early years of its existence, the Renault Safrane had an all-wheel drive version. Due to its high cost, it did not have a great consumer demand, so after 1996 it was decided to discontinue the production of all-wheel drive versions.

In 2000Ode Renault Safrane production was closed. There is a logical explanation for this. Speaking in the same segment with the traditionally strong "Germans", French engineers had to show the world something that could attract a special consumer interest in their new creation, but there was no worthy replacement in Renault's arsenal. It wasn't until 2001 that the company introduced the Vel Satis, which is the current successor to Safrane.
