The Cordia is a compact hatchback coupe manufactured by Mitsubishi Motors from 1982 to 1990. The name of the car is most likely composed of two words: "cordorite" (cordorite - a shiny mineral) and a diamond (in English: diamond) with a hint of the company's corporate logo, consisting of three diamonds. Together with the Tredia and Starion models, the Mitsubishi Cordia was among the first vehicles that the Japanese manufacturer exported to North America on its own, without the mediation of Chrysler Corporation.
Cordia was destined to take a place in the line of passenger carsmobiles between the already produced Galant and Lancer models. The design of the newcomer was very similar to the Mitsubishi Mirage, but technically, it was a front-wheel drive car with an independent suspension of the MacPherson type at the front and a continuous beam at the rear, front disc brakes, a manual or electronically controlled automatic transmission and three engines to choose from: 1.4-liter, 68 hp, 74-horsepower, 1.6-liter, and 1.6-liter 112-horsepower turbocharged engine. Some markets exported Cordia equipped with 2-liter carburetordrives with a capacity of 110 hp.
The car received a small "facelift" in 1983, and in 1984 they began to produce all-wheel drive modifications. A year later, in 1985, modified engines appeared, allowing the use of unleaded gasoline, as well as two new engines, each with a volume of 1.8 liters. Regular (100 hp) and turbocharged, 135 hp.
The car was discontinued in 1990, and sold in the United States two years earlier - in 1988.
