In 1992, having decided to prove itself in the SUV market, Opel did not invent a new one, but took the proven Japanese ISUZU, and more specifically the Trooper model, as a basis. The novelty received a purely American name Monterey, in honor of the peninsula and bay in the state of California, one of the favorite vacation spots of Americans.

Opel Monterey is a purebred Japanese car. When creating it, the Germans retained a box frame with five crossbars, powerful pillows that separate the frame from the body and the transmission.

The car was produced in two body styles - three and fivecorrect. It was delivered to the European market in three trim levels: basic, "sports" short-base RS and luxury LTD, which differs from the base by the presence of ABS, power windows, cruise control and heated seats, as well as an adjustable steering column. In the long wheelbase version, there are two smaller folding seats behind the rear seat.

Monterey is distinguished by well-thought-out ergonomics of the driver's seat and the interior as a whole. For convenience, the tailgate folds out to the side. The luggage compartment is very spacious, there are special handles andaphids for attaching bulky items.

The line of power units at the beginning of production was represented by two engines: a 3.2 liter gasoline V6 (130 kW / 177 hp) or a 3.1 liter 3.1TDS turbodiesel (84 kW / 114 hp).

The braking system of the Opel Monterey is reliable and efficient, and the brake pedal is very informative.

The Monterey suspension design is typical of a 90s Japanese SUV. Front - independent with torsion bars and double wishbones, rear - dependent: continuous axle beam, fixed on the levers, elastic elements - springs.

In 1996, Monterey underwent a restyling. Expanded the list of standard equipment. A three-liter turbodiesel with direct fuel injection and a Common Rail system with a capacity of 159 hp appeared in the range of engines. and a torque of 330 Nm at 2000 rpm. As well as a new 3.5-liter V6 petrol engine with 215 hp. They began to install two full-size airbags as standard, climaticinstallation.

The transmission has also changed: the car got rid of automatic freewheel clutches and got a vacuum system for connecting all-wheel drive by opening-closing the front axle shaft. Accordingly, it became possible to connect all-wheel drive on the go.

The copies that came off the assembly line after restyling do not differ much from the dorestyling ones - first of all, the less "rectangular" shape of the front part. Quite solid interior with a huge front panel tends to American tradition...

However, restyling did not add popularity to the model, so in 1999 it was discontinued.
