The front-wheel drive 5-door hatchback, marketed in the UK under the Austin and MG brands, was manufactured by the Austin-Rover Group from March 1983 to 1994 at the Cowley plant in Oxford. The Austin Maestro was produced in 1983-1994 in parallel with the MG Maestro (1985-1991), however, the car was often called the Rover Maestro, which is not entirely correct.

Design work on the creation of the Rover Maestro began back in 1977, it was conceived as a car for the middle class. The predecessors of the model were the Austin Max, Austin Allegro and MG 1300. The successors were the Rover 200 Mark II and MG ZS. A similar car was Austin (Rover)Montego.

Maestro versions with 1.3 l and 1.6 l petrol engines were produced from 1983 to 1993, and with a 2-liter turbodiesel in 1991-1994. In addition to the Maestro hatchback, a 3-door van was produced in the back; the commercial delivery van had a double hinged rear door.

The dimensions of the hatchback were 4000/1695/1430 mm with a wheelbase of 2510 mm and a track gauge of 1465/1440 mm, the minimum ground clearance was 140 mm, and the trunk volume was 300 liters. By folding the backrest of the rear seat in parts, it was possible, if necessary, to increase the luggage compartment to 1090 liters. Curb vehicle weightFor 925/975/1095 kg, permissible total - 1370/1440/1560 kg, depending on the type of engine.

Maestro represented solutions and technologies that were advanced for that time: the engine had an electronic control system, the manual transmission was 5-speed, the front seat belts were height-adjustable, the rear seat back was asymmetrically split, the bumpers were painted in body color, and the service mileage was assumed not less than 19,300 km (12,000 miles). Instrument cluster on the front panel integrated digital speedometer, display with maxometer, fuel gauge and temperature sensor. The fairly spacious 5-seater cabin was one of the most spacious and comfortable for passengers in this class of cars.

After a successful start, sales of the model gradually began to decline. The reason was the lack of reliability of the 1.6-liter R-series engine. As a result of the modernization carried out in July 1984, engines of the new S-series, equipped with electronic ignition, appeared, which were subsequently installed on all 1.6-liter Maestro. The equipment has also improvedmodels, they were already in the base were equipped with head restraints and a car radio.

The engines were located transversely under the hood. Carbureted 4-cylinder 8-valve 1.3 liters had a power of 69 hp / 5600 rpm and a torque of 102 Nm / 3500 rpm, and 1.6-liter engines - respectively 86 hp / 5600 rpm and 132 Nm / 3500 rpm Dynamics of 1.3-liter Maestro: 12.5 s to hundreds and a top speed of 154 km / h; 1.6-liter: 10.5 s and 167 km / h. The consumption of AI-95 gasoline for a car with a 1.3 liter engine on the highway is 5.6 liters, in the urban cycle - 7.8 liters; for 1.6 liters, the indicators correspond to 5.3 / 8.9 per 100 km.

Diesel turboThe engineered 4-cylinder 8-valve power unit with a volume of 2 liters developed a maximum power of 60 hp / 4500 rpm and a torque of 121 Nm / 2500 rpm. Maestro with this engine accelerated to 100 km / h in 16 seconds, the maximum speed was 150 km / h; fuel consumption on the highway 4.4 liters, in the city 5.9 liters and in the combined cycle - 6.2 liters per 100 km.

The steering was a gear-rack with a hydraulic booster, the minimum turning diameter was 9.9 m. The suspension was completely independent on helical springs at the front and rear.

The Maestro has front disc brakes, behind - drum. The active safety system included ABS and Brake Assist. The standard tire size was 145 SR13 for 1.3-liter cars, 165 SR13 for 1.6-liter and 175/70 SR14 for diesel versions.

In September 1995, the production of Maestro was transferred to Bulgaria. At the plant in Varna, about 2200 machines were assembled using CKD technology. Further production was discontinued in April 1996 due to high costs associated with the import of components, as well as low demand for cars. Almost 1700 "Bulgarian"uo; Maestro has been exported of 550 units to Uruguay, 400 to Argentina and 200 to Macedonia.

Later, in 1998, the rights to release the model were sold to the Chinese company Etsong, which specially built a plant in Qingdao, where the hatchback and van Maestro with minor upgrades (Etsong Lubao QE6400 Ruby, Etsong Lubao QE6440 Laird and Lubao FAW CA6410) were assembled until 2005. ...
