The Chevrolet Monza is a rear-wheel drive subcompact sports car introduced by Chevrolet in late 1974 for the 1975 model year, along with its clones: Oldsmobile Starfire and Buick Skyhawk. This car was considered as a competitor for cars such as Toyota Celica, Capri, Opel 1900 Coupe / Manta, and Ford Mustang II, as well as models with rotary engines Mazda RX-2, Rx-3.

The Chevrolet Monza sports car was built on the basis of the H-platform, which was used in cars such as the Chevrolet Vega and Pontiac Astre. The novelty was supposed to use the latest modification of the rotaryof the Wrankel. It was smaller than a conventional piston engine, but was intended to be highly efficient and allow for the same power ratings.

But soon General Motors had to abandon the development of the trend of using rotary engines. This was due to the rapid failure and high fuel consumption. This was also pushed by the rise in fuel prices due to the Arab oil boycotts of 1973 and 1974. These events also affected the American Motors Corporation car company. In place with an agreement for the acquisition of power aggregateAt General Motors, AMC developed the 1975 Pacer specifically for GM's rotary engine. But due to the fact that GM stopped producing rotary power units, AMC did not receive it, and was also unable to design and build it on its own.

The original Chevrolet Monza was released as a 2-door hatchback, which is advertised as “2 + 2 Coupe”. The car had then two configuration options: the standard Monza 'S' 2 + 2 and the more equipped Monza 2 + 2.

Since GM has abandoned the use of rotaryth engine, then under the hood of the Monza was placed a 4-cylinder power unit I4 with a volume of 2.3 liters, the power of which was 78 hp. at 4200 rpm. As an option, a 2.3-liter I4 engine with an enlarged 87 hp carburetor was offered. at 4400 rpm. The following engines were also offered as options: Chevrolet V8 with a volume of 4.3 liters with a 110 hp Rochester carburetor. at 3600 rpm and a 5.7-liter V8 engine with 125 hp. (This engine was only offered in California, USA).

But the use of large V8 engines hada number of disadvantages. The engine filled the entire engine compartment, and the spark plugs could only be reached on a lift from under the wheel on the driver's side. Also, the use of such a large engine for a relatively small car, contributed to the emergence of powerful vibrations transmitted to the transmission due to the weakening front structure and suspension.

In 1975, the Chevrolet Monza was fitted with new rectangular headlights. Also this year, the Monza won the Motor Trend Car of the Year award.

In April 1975yes there is a third version in the Monza line. It was the Monza 'S' Towne Coupe, a 2-door sedan that used a new sheet-metal body technology as opposed to a 2 + 2 hatchback. The Monza Towne Coupe was 1.5 inches shorter and slightly lighter than the Monza 2 + 2. For 1975, 66,615 cars were produced.

In 1976, the 5.7-liter V8 was replaced by a 5-liter V8 with 140 hp. at 3800 rpm, but that's California only. For the rest of the world, the previous engines were offered: a 4-cylinder I4 with a volume of 2.3 litersand a V8 with a volume of 4.3 liters.

In the same year, the Monza Spyder version appeared, the options package of which included: 4-cylinder engine with an enlarged carburetor; F41 suspension with reinforced transverse stabilizers and special shock absorbers; “Spyder” lettering on the body.

In 1977, the 4.3-liter V8 power unit was removed from the list of proposed engines. Of the available optional V8 engines, only one remains - a 5-liter V8 power unit. This lasted until 1979.

Also in 1977, a version of the Monza Mirage appears, released under the direction of the Michig company.an Auto Techniques, which has a contract with General Motors. The body was painted cameo white with red and blue stripes along the body. The car received an updated aerodynamic package and spoiler. The models were produced at the C-Therese GM plant and sent to MAT for modification, and then supplied to dealers. This year, 4 body versions were already available for the Chevrolet Monza: 2 + 2 hatchback coupe, 2 + 2 sedan / coupe, updated hatchback and station wagon.

In 1978, the Chevrolet Monza underwent some external changes in relation to the front end. Standard 4-cylinder enginel I4 with a volume of 2.3 liters in the same year replaced the power unit of the Iron Duke I4 with a volume of 2.5 liters. There was also a new engine in the list of options - a 3.2-liter V6 power unit from Chevrolet, the power of which was 90 hp. at 3600 rpm, and a 3.8-liter Buick V6 engine was offered in California.

In 1980, production of the Chevrolet Monza was completed.
