The first generation Mazda 2 was introduced in Europe in 2003. Technically, the car had a lot in common with the Ford Fiesta. The exterior and interior were not elegant. The model did not reach Russia, and in Europe it was lost among classmates of segment B. In four years, less than 140 thousand were sold.

The project of a new class B car was supposed to change the situation. After two years of work in the European design studio of Mazda, the Sassou concept was created, shown at the motor show in Frankfurt in 2005. The transformation of a concept car into a production carstudied by Ikuo Maedo. The second generation Mazda 2 was unveiled at the 2007 Geneva Motor Show. Experts managed to create a light and fast car that is completely different from its predecessor. The model became 40 mm shorter, 55 mm lower, while the wheelbase remained the same as that of its predecessor - 249 cm. The reduction in dimensions did not affect the interior comfort. On the contrary, the headroom for the front and rear passengers is considered to be one of the best in the class. Not inferior to rivals and a trunk with a volume of 250 liters, when folded within the rear seat, its capacity increases to 787 liters.

Compared to the previous generation, Mazda 2 has dropped 100 kg - up to 960 kg of curb weight (version with a 1.5-liter gasoline engine available in Russia). The use of levers with an open profile in the front suspension and shortened levers in the rear - down with 13 kg, the rejection of an additional neutralizer - another 5 kg, lightweight front seats - another 5 kg. More than 20 kg were saved on the power frame - the use of high-strength steel made it possible to create a thinner, and therefore more lflexible structure and eliminate amplifiers without sacrificing safety. Thanks to the lightening, the car became more dynamic, and fuel consumption was noticeably reduced.

The interior of the salon has its own individuality, but at the same time it is not at all flashy. The interior is relatively spacious and practical. Good visibility is achieved thanks to the low-dropped window line. Instrument scales, like the entire front panel, look modern.

The car is equipped with 3 types of gasoline engines: 1.3-liter, 75 and 84 hp. and a 1.5-liter engine developingpower of 103 hp. In Russia, only the last unit is available paired with a 5-speed manual or 4-speed automatic transmission.

In the base (Touring equipment), the Mazda 2 offers an impressive range of options, in particular, six airbags, ABS with brake force distribution, CD player with MP3 and steering wheel controls, and front power windows. The peculiarity of the Russian version is a high-capacity battery and regular seat heating. The Sport package adds climate control, rear door windowsrey, foglights, alloy wheels (R16), dynamic stabilization system, on-board computer, etc.

The smallest member of the zoom-zoom family began to arrive at European dealers in the fall of 2007. The start of sales in Russia was delayed until the spring of 2008. Mazda 2 is produced in Hiroshima, and in rather modest volumes - only 70,000 cars per year.
