The history of the company began with the creation of Società Italiana Automobili Darracq in 1906 in the town of Portello near Milan, with the intention of assembling French light automobiles “Darracq”. At the head of the society was Hugo Stella. Light cars in Italy were not popular and Stella decided to reorganize the only plant of the "Society" in aboutoriginal production of Italian cars. So, in 1910, the ALFA (Anonima Lombarda Fabbrica di Automobili) company appeared, that is, the Lombard Joint Stock Company for the Production of Automobiles.
In 1910, Stella invited the engineer J. Merosi, who had previously worked at FIAT, who created his first brainchild - an open five-seater 24CV with a capacity of 42 hp. with. Its less powerful 12CV version had 22 hp. These models became the basis for the pre-war production of ALFA.
Racing modifications were made on the chassis of basic sports models: 12CV successfully performed in prestigious competitionsiyah in the city of Modena.
The First World War suspended production, but in 1915 the company was transferred to Nicola Romeo, who in the post-war period resumed the production of passenger cars based on a new 4-cylinder engine. Romeo gave the company his euphonious and easy to remember name.
A great success for the company was the victory of Alfa P2 in the first world championship of racing cars (Motor Racing Championship) in 1925. It was in the 1920s that the company's racing cars became famous all over the world.
Faced with financial difficulties in the late 1920s due toAfter a number of banks in Italy, the company found support abroad - in England, the United States, Spain.
In 1933 the company was nationalized, its management was taken up by a special committee called IRI (Istituto per la Ricostruzione Industriale) and elected from the shareholders and employees of the company in a ratio of 50 to 50. Alfa Romeo continues to produce expensive sports and prestigious racing cars, but at the same time this firm is entrusted with the production of military trucks and engines for aviation. Engine production almost completely displaces automobile production duringsecond world war.
After the war, the company launched a new model, designed before the war, the "Golden Arrow" (Alfa Romeo 6C Golden Arrow), manufactured using aluminum alloys. The huge success of the model made it possible to quickly restore the destruction caused by the war.
In the 1950s, the board of the company invited the engineer O. Satti, who was tasked with combining the qualities of a family car and a racing car in one model. This is how the Alfa Romeo Ti became, as well as its improved variants Ti Coupe Sprint and Ti Sprint Super Sport.
On newThe Giulia Sprint GT with a cabriolet body was launched at the Arese plant.
In the 70s, the front-wheel drive model Alfasud ("Alfasud"), assembled at factories in Pomigliano, near Naples, became a new word in the automotive industry.
Since 1982, Alfa Romeo has worked closely with Nissan, creating the Arna, which combines the features of the Datsun Cherry and Alfasud.
Since 1986 the company has become part of the FIAT concern. The sporty and functional style of Alfa Romeo is retained in the Alfa Spider model with an unusual, predatory-streamlined silhouette.
The emergence of nThe first flagship of the famous brand from Milan, the Alfa Romeo 164, and even with a body from the Pininfarina itself, made a splash at the 1987 Frankfurt Motor Show. For the first time in a long time, the company flashed its originality. And although in the fast-moving and streamlined sedan (Cx = 0.3) there were some signs of involvement (door shape) in the large "pan-European" platform "tipo fore", which was jointly developed by Alfa Romeo, FIAT and 8MB, by all accounts, the late Alfa Romeo 164 became the most successful in design.
The first show of the model 145 (three-door body) took place in July 1994, 146 (fivefaithful body) - in December 1994. These are models of middle class cars with a transverse engine and front-wheel drive.
In January 1999 - a complete modernization of the model.
In September 2000, the model rolled off the assembly line, giving way to the Alfa Romeo 147.
ALFA ROMEO GTV / Spider, sports car models, as well as a front-wheel drive transverse engine coupe and spider, co-developed with Pininfarina, were first shown in 1994 in Paris.
From November 1996, a new 3.0 V6 engine was installed on the GTV, from May 1998 - a new 1.8 TS 16v engine, fromvariable valve timing, as well as a modified version of the 2.0 TS 16v engine.
In the fall of 1998, there were changes in the design of cars.
Sedan Alfa Romeo-156 ("Juliet") in 1997 was named "Car of the Year" in Europe. Alfa Romeo is famous for its sporting achievements.
In 1999, the optional Alfa 156 2.0 was fitted with a Selespeed five-speed automatic transmission based on Formula One technology, and the Alfa 156 2.5 V6 received a Q-System automatic transmission. Developed in accordance with the technical training program for Scuderia Ferrari race cars, gearboxThe Alfa 156 has exactly the same characteristics as the transmission of Michael Schumacher's F399.
The ALFA ROMEO 166, a transverse-engine, front-wheel-drive, E category car, the successor to the 164, was first shown in the fall of 1998.
The ALFA ROMEO 147 was first introduced at the Turin Auto Show on June 8, 2000. The Alfa Romeo 47 was awarded the Car of the Year 2001 title by a European jury.
In 2006, Alfa Romeo will celebrate its 100th anniversary.
